Margate Photo Fest

Margate Photo Fest (MPF) promotes socially engaged photography.

We are building a community of artists/curators/educators/ activists to explore photography's role as an active force for change within contemporary society. The aim is to showcase exciting and innovative approaches to social art and develop programs with a real impact.

To this end projects selected will deal with social/political issues affecting contemporary society, work with communities, social projects (and audience participation) or some mix thereof. Projects involving mixed media, talks or workshops are not only allowed but actively encouraged.

About: We’re a contemporary photography festival which promotes socially engaged art. Currently entering our 3rd year the aim of the event is to create fun and exciting ways to bring people together and to showcase the most innovative approaches to social art and issues.

Money: We’re an ultra low budget festival and it’s the way we intend to keep it. Curators are given £250 pounds, irrespective of status or experience, to print and design their space. Effectively this levels the playing field, creating a reliance on conceptual content and curatorial innovation rather than the name of the artists or quality of the prints. Funding is also reduced to a minimum to keep as much control in the hands of the festival and the people we work with.  It’s our ultimate intention to become completely self-funded.
